How Glass Changed the World—Over and Over Again [Materialist]

You probably haven't given much thought to the fact that there's a slab of chemically strengthened glass in your pocket, deflecting blows from keys or change or any other hard objects might slide or scrape or scratch against it, or that the hundreds of millions of similar slices of glass lining pockets around the world wasn't possible not so long ago. `The Help,' Dujardin win at lively SAG Awards (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Finally, an awards show with some surprises and spontaneity.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards featured some unexpected winners, including "The Help" for best overall cast performance and Jean Dujardin for best actor in "The Artist" alongside some of the longtime favorites in movies and television.

But there was a looseness and a playfulness that permeated the Shrine Exposition Center Sunday night ? maybe because it was a room full of people who love to perform, without the rigidity of one single host to lead them.

Unlike the great expectations that came with the sharp-tongued Ricky Gervais' reprisal at the Golden Globes a couple weeks ago or the much-anticipated return of Billy Crystal to the Academy Awards next month, there was no master of ceremonies at the SAG Awards. The presenters and winners seemed to have more room to improvise and put their own spin on the evening ? but mercifully, the show itself still managed to wrap up on time after just two hours.

And so we had three of the stars of best-cast nominee "Bridesmaids" ? Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy ? introducing their comedy with a joke about turning the name "Scorsese" into a drinking game, which became a running gag throughout the night. When HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" won the award for best drama series cast, among the first words star Steve Buscemi uttered in accepting the prize were "Martin Scorsese" ? he just happens to be one of the show's executive producers.

One of the more exciting moments of the night was the announcement of Dujardin's name in the best-actor category for his performance in the silent, black-and-white homage "The Artist." In winning the award for his portrayal of a silent-film star who finds his career in decline with the arrival of talkies, Dujardin definitely boosts his chances at the Oscars on Feb. 26. Little-known in the United States before this, the French comic bested bigger names like George Clooney ("The Descendants"), Brad Pitt ("Moneyball") and Leonardo DiCaprio ("J. Edgar").

If he follows this up with an Academy Award, Dujardin would become the first French actor ever to take the prize. Asked backstage how it would feel, Dujardin launched into a jaunty rendition of "La Marseillaise," the French national anthem.

"Pressure, big pressure," Dujardin then added in his halting English. "It's unbelievable. It's amazing already. Too early to tell."

Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer continued to cement their front-runner status in the actress and supporting actress categories, respectively, for their formidable work in "The Help." Both women play black maids in 1960s Mississippi who dare to go public about the bigotry they've endured.

"I just have to say that the stain of racism and sexism is not just for people of color or women. It's all of our burden, all of us," Davis said, accepting the ensemble prize on behalf of her "The Help" co-stars.

Backstage, Davis said of her own victory: "A few more people checked my name in the box for whatever reason. This time I kind of fooled them."

Meanwhile, Christopher Plummer picked up yet another supporting-actor prize for his lovely turn as an elderly widower who finally comes out as gay in "Beginners." Plummer won at the Golden Globes and is nominated for an Oscar. He would become the oldest actor ever to win an Academy Award at age 82, two years older than Jessica Tandy was when she won best actress for "Driving Miss Daisy."

Backstage, Plummer joked when asked if he would like to win an Oscar, an honor so elusive during his esteemed 60-year career that he did not even receive his first Academy Award nomination until two years ago, for "The Last Station."

"No, I think it's frightfully boring," Plummer said. "That's an awful question. Listen, we don't go into this business preoccupied by awards. If we did, we wouldn't last five minutes."

The win for overall cast for "The Help," when "The Artist" and "The Descendants" have been the favorites all along, makes the conversation more interesting but it isn't necessarily an indicator of how the film will do come Oscar time.

The guild's ensemble prize, considered its equivalent of a best-picture honor, has a spotty record at predicting what will win the top award at the Oscars. While "The King's Speech" won both honors a year ago, the SAG ensemble recipient has gone on to claim the top Oscar only eight times in the 16 years since the guild added the category.

The winners at the SAG ceremony often do go on to earn Oscars, however. All four acting recipients at SAG last year later took home Oscars ? Colin Firth for "The King's Speech," Natalie Portman for "Black Swan" and Christian Bale and Melissa Leo for "The Fighter."

On the television side, comedy series awards went to "Modern Family" for best ensemble; Alec Baldwin as best actor for "30 Rock"; and Betty White as best actress for "Hot in Cleveland."

"You can't name me, without naming those other wonderful women on `Hot in Cleveland,'" the 90-year-old White said. "This nomination belongs to four of us. Please, please know that I'm dealing them right in with this. I'm not going to let them keep this, but I'll let them see it."

The TV drama show winners were: Jessica Lange as best actress for "American Horror Story"; and Buscemi as best actor for "Boardwalk Empire."

For TV movie or miniseries, Kate Winslet won as best actress for "Mildred Pierce," while Paul Giamatti was named best actor for "Too Big to Fail."

The guild gave its lifetime achievement award to Mary Tyler Moore, presented by Dick Van Dyke, her co-star on the 1960s sit-com "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

Moore recalled that when she entered show business at age 18 in 1955, there were already six others Mary Moores in the Screen Actors Guild. Told to change her name, she quickly added Tyler, the middle name she shares with her father, George.

"I was Mary Tyler Moore. I spoke it out loud. Mary Tyler Moore. It sounded right so I wrote it down on the form, and it looked right," she said. "It was right. SAG was happy, my father was happy, and tonight, after having the privilege of working in this business among the most creative and talented people imaginable, I too am happy, after all."

Amber Portwood: 5 Year Prison Sentence

Wow, this is just sad. Teen Mom has been sentenced to five years in prison. She has struck a plea deal, so lets hope she can pull it off for the sake of her daughter, Leah. Amber Portwood is a hot mess. She has been arrested a few times, the latest for drugs. She was finally sentenced and the judge went kinda easy on her, all things considering. She didn’t get as many chances as Lilo, but still a good deal. She pled guilty to one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of probation violation. She has the opportunity to get the whole thing dismissed if she successfully graduates from the Madison County Drug Court program. Get all the deets at Hollyscoop. Okay this is just plain confusing. Report: 11 Iranian pilgrims kidnapped in Syria (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran's official IRNA news agency says gunmen in Syria have kidnapped 11 Iranian pilgrims traveling by road from Turkey to Damascus.

Friday's report says a bus with 49 Iranians was stopped after leaving the town of Halab on Thursday. It says gunmen abducted 11 young men from the group but let go the other passengers, who included women, elderly men and three children.

IRNA says thieves later attacked the rest of the group, stealing their money and valuables.

Iranian pilgrims routinely visit Syria ? Iran's closest ally in the Arab world ? to pay homage to Shiite holy shrines.

Last month, 7 Iranian engineers building a power plant in central Syria were kidnapped. They have not yet been released.

Tehran has staunchly backed President Bashar Assad during Syria's 10-month-old uprising.

Francine Shapiro, Ph.D.: Post-War Fatigue: The Psychological Price We're All Paying

The tragic story involving the Iraq War veteran accused of killing five homeless people could have been averted. According to his family, his war experiences caused him to come home a changed man. It also set me thinking about how many casualties of war there really are, with tragedies that play out silently all around us every day.

As a psychologist for more than 20 years, and after having given hundreds of presentations worldwide, I've been continually struck by the commonalities we all share. No one has ever come in for therapy saying, "I'm here because my father didn't love me." It's rather because people feel internally pushed into doing things they don't want to do or prevented from doing things they want to do. They know that something is holding them back in life, but can't quite get a handle on what that is.

As psychologists, we are trained to look at how people were raised to help identify the source of their problems. Of course each person is unique, with a particular set of issues and experiences. But general context is also important -- meaning that it often helps to look at when someone was raised. And what recently struck me was how we have a new generation of children being raised by parents who have returned from military combat. After 10 years of war and counting, how does this stack up against the Baby Boomer generation that came into being just a few years after World War II? More importantly, is there anything we can learn from it?

In those days, the moms stayed home to take care of the children and the fathers were the providers. Two-parent families definitely can have their advantages. However, over the years, I've treated many clients who were raised by fathers who worked long hours to put food on the table but were absent when it came to expressing love and affection. Many of my clients described fathers who were disciplinarians, who maintained a firm sense of control in the household, but were often either silent and emotionally withdrawn or angry.

If we look carefully, we can see that many of these fathers displayed signs of what we know now is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It didn't help that PTSD wasn't even listed as a diagnosis until 1980. But the fact that war experiences were common didn't make them any less impactful. From personal experience in treating veterans from World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, it's clear that there is no difference in the pain and sorrow from those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. So often their emotional burden is caused by the feelings that they were powerless to save someone. This can be even more devastating than being in danger yourself. Those who were support personnel often carry the same feelings of anger, guilt and lack of control. Who couldn't they save?

All these events can be locked in the brain as unprocessed memories and carry the emotions and feelings that were present at the time of the event. So when the young men of WWII came marching home again, they carried with them memories that were ready to be triggered at home. Since they often blamed themselves for what had happened, they were too ashamed to talk about it to anyone. But pressures at home or work could easily stir up the feelings they'd tried to ignore. Even simple things like a baby crying or a burnt dinner could trigger emotions connected with long-ago firefights they both couldn't control and didn't understand. And the ones that took the brunt of the pain were the children who were raised by fathers who could not easily communicate, or express love -- and perhaps lashed out when they were angry. As is usually the case, children take on the blame for their parents' "flaws" and think, "There must be something wrong with me/I'm not good enough." How many baby boomers still carry the wounds even though now entering retirement age? Is it any wonder that antidepressants are about as prevalent as aspirin in our culture?

Now, a new generation comes home from wars that have gone on for a decade, often with no clear sense of victory. As we see in the news, homelessness and drug use is rampant among veterans. And for those who have managed to return physically unscathed, how many carry memories of pain that also leave them feeling alienated and unable to communicate? Irritability, withdrawal, impatience and anger are potential warning signs of unprocessed memories that need to be addressed. Soldiers are trained to be stoic, but how much have they changed since the war? My bottom line here is to remind the families and friends of veterans that each generation has its silent heroes and it is our job to make sure they get the help they need. I also want to remind veterans that they should get help not only for their own sake, but for their children's sake as well.

And for those baby boomers still carrying the scars of childhood: It's never too late to get the help you need to release the past. It's all stored in memory, which can be processed and transformed into a source of resilience. Basically, you may never have been in combat, but there's no reason to stay a prisoner of your father's war.

How to deal with higher bank fees in 2012

?I think we?re going to see them try to impose fees wherever they can do it,? says Greg Daugherty, executive editor at Consumer Reports. ?We?re already seeing fees for paper statements and higher safe deposit box costs. Some banks, like Chase and PNC, are even charging customers a $25 fee to close accounts in certain circumstances.??

Higher fees are likely on various one-time services: Certified checks, money-orders and wire transfers. There may be a charge to use a teller, pay by phone, or cash a check from another bank.?

Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com, expects banks to boost their monthly maintenance fee and make it harder for you to avoid that fee.?

?It?s what you might call a stealth fee increase,? McBride says. ?The fee itself may not go up, but if the balance requirement goes up to get free checking, it amounts to a fee increase for the people who didn?t used to have to pay the fee and now do.??

You should also expect higher ATM fees for non-customers and higher penalties for overdrawing your checking account.?

Overdraft fees are already in record territory. According to a study released last week by Moebs Services, an economic research firm, the median overdraft fee jumped from $27.50 at the end of 2010 to $30 last year.?

?That?s the largest increase we?ve seen in 30 years,? says CEO Mike Moebs.?

Customers will pay if the fee makes sense
Mark Schwanhausser is a senior analyst at Javelin Strategy and Research, a consulting firm for the banking industry. He says customers won?t fight all fees, just the ones that don?t make sense.?

?You want to charge me because I want to pay my bill with my debit card? That isn?t something I want to pay. In fact, I?m going to be mad about it,? he says.?

Schwanhausser believes bankers have learned their lesson: Customers are more likely to accept a fee if it?s for a premium service that provides real benefits.?

?We?ve encouraged banks to rethink things from a consumer point-of-view and not just from a punitive fee point-of-view,? he says. ?What?s the added value for them? If there?s added value, then charge for it. If there?s not, then think hard about it.??

For example, Schwanhausser says people see the benefit of an expedited payment if it will prevent a late fee.?

Make it easier to understand fees
Many people pick a financial institution based on the location of ATMs and branch offices. The smart way to make that decision is to compare fees, terms and conditions. But that?s not easy to do.?

According to a study by the Pew Health Group?s Safe Checking in the Electronic Age Project, the median length of the disclosure forms for checking accounts at the 10 largest banks in the U.S. is 111 pages. These banks have 54 separate fees.?

(Read: Hidden Risks: The Case for Safe and Transparent Checking Accounts)?

?These fees have an impact, so consumers need to know what they are getting themselves into,? says Susan Weinstock, director of the Safe Checking Project.?

Food products are required to have nutrition information labels. Pew wants banks to use a standardized disclosure box to make it easy to see the fees and compare them.?

?It would be on bank websites and in bank branches and consumers could go online and they could look at different financial institutions and decide which one best meets their financial needs,? Weinstock says.?

How to fight back
?You need to have both eyes wide open,? advises Bankrate.com?s McBride. ?Read any correspondence you get from your bank, whether it?s by snail mail or e-mail.??

Look at the fee schedule. Watch for changes in the account terms. Odds are they?re not in your favor.?

Don?t simply accept a new or higher fee ? especially if you have more than one account with the same financial institution. Customers with multiple accounts are the most profitable. Try to negotiate. See if they?ll waive the fee. Ask if there?s a different type of account that?s better for you, one with no fees or lower fees.?

If that doesn?t work, you may want to move your money.?

?We?ve found that credit unions, online banks and local community banks tend to be cheaper than the big banks,? says Daugherty, at Consumer Reports. ?That?s where we?d suggest people look next.?

Castro: GOP race is 'idiocy' (Politico)

The Republican presidential race is ?the greatest competition of idiocy and ignorance that has ever been,? former Cuban president Fidel Castro wrote in an opinion piece on Wednesday.

Castro made his comments in his latest column of ?reflections? on a Cuban government website, attacking the Republican candidates two days after their debate in Florida.

?The selection of a Republican candidate for the presidency of this globalized and expansive empire is ? and I mean this seriously ? the greatest competition of idiocy and ignorance that has ever been,? he wrote, according to The Associated Press.

During the debate, Mitt Romney responded to a question of how he would react to a 3 a.m. announcement of Castro?s death by referencing the Jan. 19 death of Cuban prisoner Wilman Villar.

?We just had, with Wilman Villar, his life was just lost in a hunger strike fighting for democracy,? Romney said.

Castro wrote that Villar was a common criminal and not a political dissident, the AP reported.

Castro did not reference the comments that Romney and Newt Gingrich made about what they would do if he died, the AP wrote. Romney said he would ?thank heavens? Castro had ?returned to his maker,? while Gingrich said, ?I don?t think Fidel?s going to meet his maker. I think he?s going to go to the other place.?

The former Cuban president wrote he was too busy to spend any additional time evaluating the Republican field.

Rate on 30-year fixed mortgage rises to 3.98 pct. (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage rose this week for the first time this month, though it remained below 4 percent for the eighth straight week.

The low rates may be contributing to a slow turnaround in the depressed housing market. Still, many who can afford to buy or refinance a home have already done so.

Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage rose to 3.98 percent this week. That's up from 3.88 percent the previous week, which was the lowest level on record.

The average on the 15-year fixed mortgage also rose to 3.24 percent, from 3.17 percent the previous week. The 15-year mortgage hit a record low of 3.16 percent two weeks ago.

Mortgage rates are low because they tend to track the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which fell below 2 percent this week.

For the past three months, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate has hovered near 4 percent. Historically low mortgage rates are among the signs that point to a pickup in the housing market this year.

Sales of previously occupied homes rose in December for a third straight month. Homebuilders are slightly more hopeful because more people are saying they might consider buying this year. And home construction picked up in the final quarter of last year.

Still, new homes fell in December, the Commerce Department said Thursday. About 302,000 new homes were sold last year, making 2011 the worst year for new home sales on records dating back to 1963.

High unemployment and scant wage gains have made it harder for many people to qualify for loans. Many don't want to sink money into a home that they fear could lose value over the next few years.

Builders are hopeful that the low rates could boost sales next year. Low mortgage rates were cited as a key reason the National Association of Home Builders survey of builder sentiment rose strongly in December and January.

To calculate the average rates, Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country Monday through Wednesday of each week.

The average rates don't include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates. One point equals 1 percent of the loan amount.

The average fee for the 30-year loan dipped to 0.7 from 0.8; the average on the 15-year fixed mortgage was unchanged at 0.8.

For the five-year adjustable loan, the average rate rose to 2.85 percent from 2.82 percent. The average on the one-year adjustable loan was unchanged at 2.74 percent.

The average fee on the five-year adjustable loan rose was unchanged at 0.7; the average on the one-year adjustable-rate loan was unchanged at 0.6.

NASA sees development of tropical storm 09S in southern Indian Ocean

ScienceDaily (Jan. 25, 2012) ? NASA's Aqua satellite passed over the low pressure system called System 97S on Jan. 24 and observed a large area of strong thunderstorms around its center that hinted at further development. On Jan. 25, the low strengthened into the ninth tropical depression and now a tropical storm of the Southern Indian Ocean.

NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Tropical Storm 09S on January 25 at 7:05 UTC (2:05 a.m. EST), and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument measured the cloud top temperatures. Just as they appeared in infrared imagery on January 24, thunderstorm cloud tops around the entire center of circulation and in some of the bands of thunderstorms that circled the center from northwest to northeast were colder than -63 Fahrenheit (-52.7 Celsius). Temperatures that cold indicate uplift (and evaporation) of air is very strong, and it pushes the cloud tops to the top of the troposphere. When cloud tops get that high, they tend to drop heavy rainfall (around 2 inches/50 mm per hour).

AIRS infrared imagery revealed that the convection continues to strengthen and during the early hours on January 25, bands of thunderstorms were developing around the center.

Although Tropical Storm 09S has moved in a westerly direction over the last couple of days, a weather system (elongated area of high pressure, called a ridge) will begin pushing it eastward toward Western Australia late on January 25. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center has forecast Tropical Storm 09S (TS09S) to come closest to the coastline of Western Australia by January 29 and 30, 2012.

At 1500 UTC (10 a.m. EST) on January 25, TS09S had maximum sustained winds near 35 knots (40 mph/~65 kph). It was located near 16.0 South latitude and 107.8 East longitude, about 515 nautical miles (~592 miles/~953 km) northwest of Learmonth, Australia. The storm was still moving to the west at 5 knots (~6 mph/9 kph), but is expected to change course to the east-southeast.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects that Tropical Storm 09S will continue to strengthen over the next couple of days and could reach Cyclone status.

Kim Kardashian Co-Hosts Live with Kelly, Refers to Divorce as "Bad Business Decision"

As far as we know, every celebrity with a personality did not die in some kind of freak accident last night.

Yet despite the availability of, oh, anyone else, Kim Kardashian sat in with Kelly Ripa as a guest host this morning on the latter's talk show, at first making small talk about her skin; then trying to act like she watched last night's Giants/49ers NFC Championship Game; and, finally, of course, touching on her divorce from Kris Humphries.

Kim acknowledged it's been a "tough couple months," adding the same nonsense she's been spewing for weeks:

"Being a hopeless romantic, I wanted to believe in something so badly. If you think I really made all that money that everyone claimed we made on the wedding and that it was for TV... I'm a smart businesswoman, I would have stayed married longer... This was a bad business decision. I really didn't think following my heart would create this much backlash."

In this sense, we actually believe her. Kardashian hasn't had an original thought in about 14 years.

Hamster 'Hoarder': Man Surrenders 94 Pets To Animal Shelter

(AOL Real Estate) He bought just two of the furry critters. A year and a half later there were more than 90 of them, living in fishbowls and Tupperware containers, and causing him to starve himself to feed them.

A man from Lawrence, Mass., recently surrendered 94 hamsters to a local animal shelter that he had collected over a period of 18 months as they rapidly reproduced.

Much as with other animal hoarders, like the Florida couple who amassed 700 cats, the man had held onto his pets out of concern for their health, "where a sort of benign approach to dealing with [fast-breeding pets] resulted in a catastrophic number of animals," said Mike Keiley, director of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' care and adoption center, the shelter that accepted the hamsters.

Until he surrendered the hairy rodents, the man reportedly had managed to provide them with good care. Aside from a few minor abrasions -- the result of crowded living conditions, Keiley said -- all of the hamsters were found to be in good health during triage by the MSPCA. In fact, the man, who is on welfare, was so committed to caring for his hamsters that he began to go hungry, spending what little money he had on their food instead of his, Keiley said. He explained that the man's commitment to his hamsters' health distinguishes him from most pet hoarders -- who usually allow their pets' health to deteriorate -- and calls into question whether or not he actually deserves the designation.

The man sacrificed much of his apartment for them, too, storing the animals in an increasingly makeshift array of shelters including aquariums, fish bowls, buckets, Tupperware and a 10-gallon litter box. After realizing his situation was not sustainable, Keiley said, the man contacted the MSPCA, whose staff was stunned to hear the man say he wanted to surrender about 80 of the rodents.

Keiley says he and his staff are "glad that he came in and voluntarily addressed the issue." He also applauds the man's willingness to give up every last one of the pets, explaining that holding onto even a few can present a serious risk of relapsing into hoarding behavior.

Curbing Pet Hoarding Is No Easy Task

The man's situation sheds light on the legal difficulties of pet hoarding. Sometimes town governments determine the maximum number of pets a resident may own, while other times they don't, said MSPCA director of advocacy Kara Holmquist. And even if town leaders set such statutes, they typically only apply to dogs, and "it's often hard to come up with an absolute number over which a person is a responsible pet owner." Different owners are capable of owning different amounts of pets, she said.

What's more, the people who amass pets are often "loners," Keiley added. The problem can go unnoticed even if a person's lease prohibits, or stipulates limits, on pets, he said. To further complicate the issue, tenants are frequently reluctant to report their neighbors if they suspect a problem.

Obama to press Congress to revisit $1.2T in cuts

(AP) ? In its budget submission next month, the Obama administration will urge lawmakers to revisit the failed attempt by a congressional supercommittee to cut the deficit by at least $1.2 trillion, the White House says.

The proposal runs counter to the common wisdom in Washington that any major deficit reduction effort is unlikely in a presidential election year. Instead, lawmakers are focusing on a one-year extension of a payroll tax cut and supplemental jobless benefits sought by the president as part of last fall's jobs agenda.

But also looming are sweeping across-the-board spending cuts required next year because of the supercommittee deadlock. Top lawmakers like House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., are focusing on a less ambitious one-year plan to give the Pentagon a reprieve from cuts that both the administration and Republicans say would cripple the military.

The White House plan, likely to reprise new taxes and fee proposals that are nonstarters with Capitol Hill Republicans, would turn off the entire nine-year, $1.2 trillion across-the-board spending cuts, referred to as a "sequester."

"We have a sequester coming less than a year from now unless Congress acts," said a senior administration official. "We're going to ask Congress to do now what we think Congress should have done in December, which is enact more than $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction, turn off the sequester and maintain the (spending caps)."

The official required anonymity as a condition to speak to a reporter on the plan.

That plan of budget cuts would be imposed under last summer's budget and debt pact between Obama and Congress that imposed $900 billion in savings from accounts appropriated by Congress each year and promised at least $1.2 trillion more from the work on the deficit supercommittee, or, failing that, across-the-board cuts to a sweeping set of defense and domestic programs.

The threat of the across-the-board cuts was supposed to prod the panel, but it never got on track and collapsed just before Thanksgiving over intractable differences on tax increases and cuts to popular programs like Medicare.

The failure of the panel capped a long, difficult budget year in which the warring sides were only able to agree when facing either a shutdown of the government or an unthinkable default on U.S. obligations. Policymakers face the prospect of more gridlock this year as election-year politics promise to even further cripple the already limited ability of Obama and Capitol Hill Republicans to work together.

In that light, the administration's proposal could be doomed to dead-on-arrival status despite widespread desire to turn off the automatic cuts

At the same time, a new wrinkle has emerged due to the collapse of the supercommittee: a new set of spending caps for the 2013 budget year that begins Oct. 1 that require cuts of about $8 billion from the $554 billion budget for defense programs, the first outright cuts since the so-called peace dividend of the early 1990s.

The required defense cuts are separate from those that would be imposed under the sequester, but the administration official predicted lawmakers might revisit them when turning to the annual appropriations bills later this year.

The budget is slated to be released Feb. 6.

Repurpose a Magazine Rack into a Canned Food Holder [Clever Uses]

Repurpose a Magazine Rack into a Canned Food HolderAnother one for the "why didn't I think of that" files: Turn a magazine holder on its side and stick two pins in it for space-saving organization in the pantry.

Cans, as you know, are awkward to store. They take too much space and, stacked, are just a mess. A magazine holder is apparently the perfect-sized organizer when tilted on its back, as PB&Jstories discovered. With two flattened and spray-painted bobby pins as stoppers at the ends, cans are neatly contained on your shelves.

Wikipedia editors question site's planned blackout

(AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth, file pool)

(AP) ? Can the world live without Wikipedia for a day? The shutdown of one of the Internet's most-visited sites is not sitting well with some of its volunteer editors, who say the protest of anti-piracy legislation could threaten the credibility of their work.

"My main concern is that it puts the organization in the role of advocacy, and that's a slippery slope," said editor Robert Lawton, a Michigan computer consultant who would prefer that the encyclopedia stick to being a neutral repository of knowledge. "Before we know it, we're blacked out because we want to save the whales."

Wikipedia's English-language site shut down at midnight Eastern Standard Time Tuesday and the organization said it would stay down for 24 hours.

Instead of encyclopedia articles, visitors to the site saw a stark black-and-white page with the message: "Imagine a world without free knowledge." It carried a link to information about the two congressional bills and details about how to reach lawmakers.

It is the first time the English site has been blacked out. Wikipedia's Italian site came down once briefly in protest to an Internet censorship bill put forward by the Berlusconi government. The bill did not advance.

The shutdown adds to a growing body of critics who are speaking out against the legislation. But some editors are so uneasy with the move that they have blacked out their own user profile pages or resigned their administrative rights on the site to protest. Some likened the site's decision to fighting censorship with censorship.

One of the site's own "five pillars" of conduct says that Wikipedia "is written from a neutral point of view." The site strives to "avoid advocacy, and we characterize information and issues rather than debate them."

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales argues that the site can maintain neutrality in content even as it takes public positions on issues.

"The encyclopedia will always be neutral. The community need not be, not when the encyclopedia is threatened," he tweeted.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which administers the site, announced the blackout late Monday, after polling its community of volunteer contributors and editors and getting responses from 1,800 of them. The protest is aimed at the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate.

"If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States," the foundation said.

Both bills are designed to crack down on sales of pirated American products overseas, and they have the support of the film and music industry. Among the opponents are many Internet companies such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, eBay and AOL. They say the bills would hurt the industry and infringe on free-speech rights.

Social news website Reddit.com is shutting down for 12 hours on Wednesday, but most companies are staying up. Google Inc.'s home page linked to a petition urging Congress: "Don't censor the Web."

Dick Costollo, CEO of Twitter, said he opposes the legislation as well, but shutting down the service was out of the question.

"Closing a global business in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish," Costollo tweeted.

Since Wikimedia depends on a small army of volunteers who create and update articles, it's particularly concerned about a lack of exemptions in the bills for sites where users might contribute copyrighted content. Today, it has no obligation under U.S. law except removing that content if a copyright holder complains. But under the House version of the bill, it could be shut down unless it polices its own pages.

The plans for the protest were moving forward even though the bill's prospects appeared to be dimming. On Saturday, Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican, said the bill would not move to the House floor for a vote unless consensus is reached. However, Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, said work on the bill would resume next month.

The White House raised concerns over the weekend, pledging to work with Congress to battle piracy and counterfeiting while defending free expression, privacy and innovation in the Internet. The administration signaled it might use its veto power, if necessary.

That the bill seems unlikely to pass is another reason Lawton opposes the blackout.

"I think there are far more important things for the organization to focus aside from legislation that isn't likely to pass anyway," he said. He's been contributing to Wikipedia for eight years.

Danny Chia, another contributor to the site, said he had mixed feelings about the blackout. The neutrality applies to the content, but a lot of people interpret it as being about the site as a whole, said the Los Altos, Calif., software engineer.

In an online discussion, others raised the same point about the blackout: Appearances matter, and if the audience sees Wikipedia taking a stand, it might not believe the articles are objective, either.

Wikipedia has seen a small decline in participation, from a peak of 100,000 active editors a year ago to about 90,000 now. Wikimedia Foundation blames this mainly on outdated editing tools, and believes it can get the number growing again with software upgrades.

James Bond "Skyfall" plot details revealed (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Daniel Craig is back as James Bond, and though details of his next adventure, "Skyfall," are being kept closely under wraps, Sony did reveal a few tantalizing clues in an official plot summary released this week.

The hotly anticipated film doesn't hit theaters until November 7, but it sounds like 007's next mission will severely test his relationship with his mentor, M (Judi Dench).

"In 'Skyfall,' Bond's loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her," the summary reads. "As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost."

Sounds like Dench will have more to do this go-round than simply deliver ultimatums to her skirt-chasing protege.

For fans of "Casino Royale" and the skimpy swim trunks Craig sported in his inaugural Bond adventure, there's an added incentive to check out the 23rd film in the action series. According to an image from the film that's been hopping about the web, the spy takes a moment from all that globe-trotting to hit the pool.

In addition to Craig and Dench, the "Skyfall" cast boasts Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Ben Chaplin, Albert Finney, and Ralph Fiennes. Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") directs.

Dolphins may be out of luck for quarterback in NFL draft

For weeks last season, the question wasn't whether the Dolphins would draft a quarterback in the first round, but which one.

No longer. Several factors conspired to practically ensure that Miami will address a different position with the eighth or ninth pick of the first round, barring a trade-up with St. Louis for the No. 2 choice, and the right to select Baylor's Robert Griffin III.

With Matt Barkley and Landry Jones deciding to remain in school, Griffin soaring up draft boards, and the Dolphins winning more games than quarterback-starved Cleveland and Washington, there is no quarterback considered worthy of selection in the Dolphins' first-round range. And that means Miami's best options at that spot figure to be an offensive tackle, a defensive end or a linebacker such as Boston College's Luke Kuechley. Cornerback is not out of the question.

A coin flip next month will determine whether the Dolphins or Panthers pick eighth. Andrew Luck obviously will be off the board by Miami's pick, and Griffin, Southern California offensive tackle Matt Kalil and LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne likely will be, too. So could Alabama's Trent Richardson, but Miami doesn't need a running back. A few others on the Dolphins' radar also could be gone, including Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon.

Beyond a costly trade-up for Griffin, here's an early look at Miami's potential options with its pick, by position:

Offensive tackle: Right tackle might be the most pressing need on the roster, and the free agent class is weak. The Dolphins could have two appealing options: Iowa's Riley Reiff and Stanford's Jonathan Martin. Both played left tackle but would need to move to the right side with the Dolphins. Mel Kiper has Reiff eighth and Martin ninth among all prospects on his ESPN.com ratings.

Reiff "isn't a mauler but dependable, consistent, technically sound," Todd McShay wrote on ESPN .com. Martin, according to Kiper, "has a chance to develop into a fantastic player."

Defensive linemen: It's highly questionable - considered less than 50/50 - that North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples will be there when Miami picks. McShay has him going fifth, Kiper seventh. Coples, 6-6 and 285 pounds, had 7 1/2 sacks this season and would fit nicely in a 4-3 or 3-4 defense.

"Production isn't amazing, but the skill set is hard to look past," Kiper said. "He'll need to add to his arsenal with increased blocking attention. Great size and length to hold the edge as a 4-3 defensive end."

Keep an eye on two other defensive ends who could play outside linebacker in a 3-4: Clemson's Andre Branch (ranked 11th overall by McShay) and South Carolina's Melvin Ingram (ranked 13th). Both had 10 sacks this season.

LSU's third-year sophomore tackle Michael Brockers "has the size and strength to dominate the point of attack as a run defender," said McShay, who ranks him 17th.

Kiper's highest-rated defensive tackles are Penn State's Devon Still (11th overall) and Mississippi State's Fletcher Cox (15th). Still, 6-5 and 310, is a "great penetrator and has been extremely disruptive, breaking up double-teams to pile up tackles for losses," Kiper wrote.

Tanker carrying fuel nears iced-in Alaska town (AP)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? The ice that has cut off a remote Alaska town for months will connect it to the world again when crews build a path over it to carry fuel from a Russian tanker that was moored a half-mile from the town's harbor Sunday morning.

Workers were waiting for disturbed ice to freeze again so they could create some sort of roadway across the 2,100 feet from tanker to the harbor in Nome, upon which they'll rest a hose that will transfer 1.3 million gallons of fuel.

A storm prevented Nome's 3,500 residents from getting a fuel delivery by barge in November. Without the tanker delivery, supplies of diesel fuel, gasoline and home heating fuel Nome are expected to run out in March and April, well before a barge delivery again in late May or June.

The tanker began its journey from Russia in mid-December and has slowly made its way toward Nome, stalled by thick ice, strong ocean currents and one Alaska's snowiest winters in memory. It picked up diesel fuel in South Korea, then headed to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where it took on unleaded gasoline. Late Thursday, the vessels stopped offshore and began planning the transfer to Nome, more than 500 miles from Anchorage on Alaska's west coast.

A Coast Guard cutter cleared a path through hundreds of miles of Bering Sea ice for the tanker.

Now, residents await the journey's final leg, which comes with its own hurdles: In addition to waiting for the ice to freeze, crews must begin the transfer in daylight, a state mandate. But Nome has just five hours of daylight this time of year.

"It's kind of like a football game. We're on the 5- yard line and we just want to work into the goal line," said Sitnasuak Native Corp. board chairman Jason Evans, whose hometown is Nome. Sitnasuak provides fuel and other services to the region.

Despite the complicated logistics of delivering fuel by sea in winter, Sitnasuak opted for the extra delivery after determining that it would be much less costly and more practical than flying fuel to Nome.

A Coast Guard spokesman didn't know how long it will be before fuel flows as crews must wait 12 hours, or until about 5 a.m. local time Sunday (6 a.m. Pacific), to ensure that the disturbed ice has refrozen.

"We were able to successfully navigate that last bit of ice," Coast Guard spokesman Kip Wadlow said. "We were able to get it pretty much right on the money, in the position that the industry representatives wanted to start the fuel transfer process."

The crew of the 370-foot tanker Renda was working to ensure the safe transfer of the fuel through a segmented hose that will be laid on top of the ice to the harbor, located about 2,100 feet from the ship, Wadlow said in a telephone interview from Nome on Saturday night.

Once crews create a suitable path for the hose to rest on, its segments will have to be bolted together and inspected before the fuel can begin to flow.

Though the transfer must start during daylight, it can continue in darkness, Betty Schorr of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation has said. It could be finished within 36 hours if everything goes smoothly, but it could take as long as five days, she said.

Earlier Saturday, Evans gave details of the transfer process.

Once the hose is laid down, he said personnel will walk its entire length every 30 minutes to check it for leaks. Each segment of hose will have its own spill containment area, and extra absorbent boom will be on hand in case of a spill.

Evans said he hopes the crew will begin unloading Sunday.

Evans, however, cautioned that delivering the fuel is only half the mission.

"The ships need to transition back through 300 miles of ice," he said. "I say we're not done until the ships are safely back at their home ports" in Seattle and Russia.

Beyonce's Bandmate Michelle Williams: Blue Ivy Is "Absolutely Gorgeous"

"Glory," indeed!

Beyonce's former Destiny's Child bandmate was among those who has already met Blue Ivy Carter, the singer's first child with hubby Jay-Z, born in NYC on Jan. 7.

PHOTOS: Beyonce's bikini body

"She is absolutely gorgeous. We were all in love," Williams, 31, told USA Today at Saturday's BET Honors in Washington, D.C.

Beyonce, 30, Jay-Z, 42 and their little one have not yet been photographed since the much-reported birth went down in a posh, private "executive suite" at Lenox Hill Hospital two weekends ago.

PHOTOS: How Beyonce rocked her baby bump

But the superstar couple "have already settled into their role of being parents, and it's just awesome to see," Williams added.

Also at the BET event, fellow Destiny's Child survivor Kelly Rowland was more reluctant to dish on the most talked-about baby of the new year.

PHOTOS: Who's the cutest A-list baby of them all?

"That will be something that everybody will have to experience the same way I did," the "Commander" singer said. "That's for her parents to disclose, not myself."

Little Blue birth was "emotional and peaceful," Beyonce and Jay-Z said in a statement last week. "We are in heaven."

PayPal, eBay see huge gains in mobile transactions (Appolicious)

The trend of consumers turning to their mobile devices to spend money and purchase goods is moving so fast, not even the people making the transactions possible, like PayPal, are able to keep up with their predictions of its growth rate.

That?s the story from GigaOM, which points out that PayPal undershot its estimates for how much money it would process through its mobile apps on Google?s Android operating system and Apple?s iOS platform. The online payment company originally estimated in Fall 2010 that it would process about $1.5 billion in mobile payments in 2011, which was double the $750 million it processed in 2010.

But by April, PayPal had revised that estimation up to $2 billion. By June, it had to change the prediction again -- $3 billion. Then in October, the numbers suggested PayPal would process $3.5 billion in volume, but even that number was wrong. This week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, PayPal announced the mobile payment volume it processed during the last year: $4 billion.

That?s not only a huge number, it?s a huge number that even PayPal didn?t see coming as early as six months ago. We know the trend of people becoming more comfortable with their smartphones and using them as extensions of online shopping is on the uptick, but PayPal?s numbers could suggest it?s growing even faster than anyone previously thought.

PayPal?s parent company, eBay, is seeing similar shifts in volume to mobile, GigaOM reports. In 2010, the company moved about $2 billion in gross merchandise value thanks to mobile transactions through its apps; in 2011, that number spiked to $5 billion. And 2012 should be even better, with eBay estimating $8 billion in gross merchandise value across mobile for itself and $7 billion in mobile payment volume for PayPal.

It?s not just good news for eBay and PayPal. The rise in mobile transactions is good news for all retailers, and we saw mobile make a big splash during the last holiday season. Records for mobile sales were expected to snap across Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and IBM recently reported that 14.6 percent of all traffic to retailers? sites during December, plus 11 percent of all online purchases during the same time, came from mobile devices. Both those numbers were up significantly over 2010, rising from 5.6 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively.

More people using their smartphones to make purchases means a variety of positive things for the industry, like better apps and support to make that online shopping possible. Already there are thousands of retailers in the Android Market that make it easy to use their mobile apps to buy the things you want and need. With more customers to court and more money to be made, the mobile shopping experience will only get easier, more useful, faster and better.
