Cerrone moves into title picture by smashing Siver at UFC 137

Cerrone moves into title picture by smashing Siver at UFC 137

LAS VEGAS - The new Donald Cerrone is one scary individual. The former WEC star continued his assault on the UFC lightweight by destroying as previously hot Denis Siver in less than three minutes.

Cerrone (17-3, 4-0 UFC) rocked Siver on the feet several times before finishing him with a rear-naked at the 2:25 mark of the first round in the second fight on the UFC 137 Spike broadcast.

[Related: UFC 137: Penn, 'Cro Cop' set to retire after losses]

Cerrone's now won six straight fights and last two have come via brutal knockout. The list of title contenders is long at 155 pounds, but Cerrone has certainly earned himself a shot at one of the guys in the top six.

Both fighters came out throwing, but it was Cerrone who was able to deal with getting hit. He fired back hard shots and when he landed a huge left kick to the head, it was the beginning of the end for the Russian fighting out of Germany. Siver's legs were lost. He wobbled for several seconds before grabbing a Cerrone leg and slowing the down the fight along the cage.

The fighters separated and Cerrone landed a another right straight down the pipe. Siver went down to his knees where Cerrone jumped on his back and quickly got his hooks in. Seconds later, he slapped on the rear-naked choke and Siver tapped almost immediately.

Cerrone loves to fight so he may not wait until one of the big boys is free to fight. He said before and after the fight, he'd like another bout before the end of 2011. He's 4-0 this year.

Siver (19-8, 8-5 UFC) had won four straight coming in.

Cheaper silver dominates festival sales in India (Reuters)

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? Small-sized silver bars and coins dominated festival sales in India, the world's top consumer, as precious metals consumers hit by inflation chose the cheaper white metal in hopes of future price gains.

On Monday, India celebrates Dhanteras, the first day of the five-day Diwali festival, considered auspicious for buying of precious metals.

"We are interested in silver coins for mahurat (auspicious) trading. We can buy more silver for a lesser amount. For gold we will have to pay a high amount," said 50-year-old P.S. Singhvi, a businessman, in Hindi.

He was one of the prospective customers in a queue of more than 100 people outside the 223-year-old Narrondass Manordass establishment at Sheikh Memon street in Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar, one of the busiest bullion markets in India.

Singhvi said he has been buying the white metal from Narrondass Manordass for 25 years.

Silver is down 28 percent from its April peak, compared with a seven percent fall in prices of gold since its peak in September.

The yellow metal traded at 26,854 rupees per 10 grams on Monday, while silver was a little over 53,000 rupees per kg.

India could import 250-300 tonnes of silver during the quarter, Prithviraj Kothari, president of the Bombay Bullion Association, said earlier. Gold imports are seen rising 30-40 percent, traders said.

There are more silver sales than gold and people are buying for "investment purposes", said 32-year-old Vikas Rawal, manager at Mumbai-based retailer U.T. Zaveri. "If we look at the gold and silver ratio, silver is more."

INFLATION BITES

The disposable income of consumers which might have been used to buy gold has been reduced by stubbornly high inflation that has prompted the central bank to increase interest rates a dozen times in the past 18 months. Its key rate stands at 8.25 percent.

"Earlier, we used to sit until midnight for sales," said Rawal, adding that this was no longer the case due to inflation. Most stores were empty other than a few widely trusted jewellers.

"There are no customers at jewellery showrooms. Coins of 1 gram, 2 grams, etc are flavour of the season," said Ashok Jain, proprietor of Chenaji Narsinghji at Mumbai's oldest jewellery market.

India's gold imports rose 29.9 percent to 265 tonnes in the last quarter of 2010. Investment demand rose 15 percent 74.4 tonnes, while jewellery demand rose 47 percent to 210.5 tonnes in the December quarter. Shipments are expected to be robust this year.

ETF SALES ZOOM

Volumes at the country's biggest gold fund, Benchmark Mutual Fund, owned by Goldman Sachs Asset Management (India) pvt Ltd, rose by more than 17 times to 1.01 million units from an average of 59,002 units, indicating acceptance of the paper form of gold as an investment on the auspicious occasion.

The fund recorded a volume of 1.115 million units on Akshaya Tritiya Day, another big gold buying festival in India.

"Overall sales have been much higher than average, and with the extended trading hours, its likely to increase further," said Chirag Mehta, gold fund manager with Quantum Asset Management Company, which manages 450 million rupees in the fund.

The Bombay Stock Exchange, which sells the gold ETF, have extended trading hours and waived transaction fees for Dhanteras sales, its spokesperson said in a statement.

"As the awareness of gold ETFs increase and people understand that gold ETFs are as good as gold as each unit is backed by physical gold, more customers are preferring this form for purchase," Mehta said.

The World Gold Council, an association funded by global gold miners, expects ETF demand in India to "explode" as investors get accustomed to "click-and-park" investing, shying away from sagging stock markets and as high inflation eats into bank savings.

ETF gold collections are minimal compared with India's annual consumption of about 900 tonnes, but fund managers pin high hopes on this form of paper gold.

Corning peels back the petals on Lotus Glass, promises low-power, high performance

The glass masters over at Corning are at it again. The same company that unleashed Gorilla Glass upon the world has now come out with a brand new, albeit less ferocious-sounding material, known as Corning Lotus Glass. Designed with LCD and OLED displays in mind, this substrate promises to deliver pristine picture quality without sucking up too much power. According to Corning, this performance is largely due to Lotus' thermal and dimensional stability, which allows for greater resolution and speedier response times. These thermal properties also allow it to maintain its form during especially hot processing, thereby avoiding any nasty warping effects. Corning Lotus Glass has already launched into production, but there's no word yet on when we can expect to see it pop up in commercial products. Head past the break for a rather florid press release.

(AP) ? An 87-year-old Indiana man arrested in Michigan with 104 bricks of cocaine in his pickup truck has told a judge he was forced at "gunpoint" to carry the load.

During a boisterous appearance in court Monday, Leo Sharp had trouble keeping quiet. The Michigan City, Ind., man was released on bond, three days after he was stopped for improper lane use while driving alone on Interstate 94 near Chelsea, 60 miles west of Detroit.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration state troopers with the help of a drug-sniffing dog discovered 104 brick-sized objects of cocaine Friday.

A criminal complaint signed by a DEA agent is thin on details, and there was no mention in court about Sharp's destination.

Outside court, Sharp told The Associated Press that he's innocent.

Tunisian elections set to empower Islamists. How moderate will they be?

Tunisian elections: Islamist party Nahda is set to do well in today's historic election in Tunisia, which will be a litmus test for the Arab Spring.

Two opposing forces have claimed to speak for the Tunisian people in the run-up to the country?s first free elections for a constituent assembly today.

Last week, thousands of angry salafists -- radical Muslims -- marched through the streets of the capital, Tunis, with many in the crowd shouting: "The people want an Islamic state."

A few days later, a smaller, better-dressed crowd of perhaps 2,000 people walked down Mohamed V boulevard in Tunis shouting: "The people want a civic state."

Both slogans were a play of words on "the people want the fall of the regime," which became the slogan of the Tunisian revolution and then a rallying cry for protesters across the Arab world.

Tunisia?s elections, more than nine months after the country toppled its dictator of 23 years, Zine El Abedine Ben Ali, are a litmus test for the Arab Spring.

Tunisia was the first Arab country to topple its dictator, and it is now also the first to put democracy into practice.

?Tunisia is holding what looks so far like the first free democratic elections in the Arab world, not counting Iraq where elections were held only after a US invasion,? says Issandr Al-Amrani, a Moroccan-American political analyst who runs the well-respected website The Arabist from Cairo and is in Tunis for today's vote.

?But Tunisia is on the periphery of the Arab world, so it remains to be seen what effect free elections here will have on other Arab countries like Egypt?, he adds.

Senate rejects GOP effort on terrorist trials (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Senate voted early Friday to reject a Republican effort to prohibit the United States from prosecuting foreign terrorist suspects in civilian courts, handing a victory to President Barack Obama.

By 52-47, senators turned aside a proposal by Sen. Kelly Ayotte (AY-aht), R-N.H., that would have forced such trials to occur before military tribunals or commissions. The Obama administration has fought to continue bringing such cases in federal courts, with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Attorney General Eric Holder writing Senate leaders on Thursday that the measure would deprive them of a potent weapon against terrorism and increase the risk of terrorists escaping justice.

Obama has had numerous clashes with Congress over the handling of war on terror detainees. Congress has voted to prevent the transfer of detainees from the naval prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the U.S. Obama has sought to close that detention facility but has been opposed by Republicans and some Democratic lawmakers.

Ayotte said it would be dangerous to let terrorists exercise the protections against self-incrimination and other rights of civilian courts that they might use to avoid surrendering critical information to investigators. Republicans cited last November's acquittal by a federal jury in New York of all but one of hundreds of charges brought against Ahmed Ghailani for his role in destroying two U.S. embassies in Africa, in which 224 people were killed.

"Enemy combatants are not common criminals who just robbed the liquor store," she said, adding, "The priority has to be on gathering information to protect Americans."

Democrats said since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 10 years ago, 300 terrorist cases have been successfully prosecuted in federal courts, compared to just three before military commissions. They also pointed to last week's guilty plea in a federal court in Detroit by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab for trying to destroy a jetliner with a bomb in his underwear and the FBI's successful interrogation of Abdulmutallab.

"Give the president the power he needs to keep America safe," said Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill.

Ayotte fell well short of the 60 votes she needed for her amendment to prevail. The vote came as the Senate debated deep into the night over a wide-ranging spending bill that it will not complete until it returns next month after a one-week recess. .

Fallout of a giant meteorite strike revealed in new model

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2011) ? Seeking to better understand the level of death and destruction that would result from a large meteorite striking Earth, Princeton University researchers have developed a new model that can not only more accurately simulate the seismic fallout of such an impact, but also help reveal new information about the surface and interior of planets based on past collisions.

Princeton researchers created the first model to take into account Earth's elliptical shape, surface features and ocean depths in simulations of how seismic waves generated by a meteorite collision would spread across and within the planet. Current projections rely on models of a featureless spherical world with nothing to disrupt the meteorite's impact, the researchers report in the October issue of Geophysical Journal International.

The researchers -- based in the laboratory of Jeroen Tromp, the Blair Professor of Geology in Princeton's Department of Geosciences -- simulated the meteorite strike that caused the Chicxulub crater in Mexico, an impact 2 million times more powerful than a hydrogen bomb that many scientists believe triggered the mass extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The team's rendering of the planet showed that the impact's seismic waves would be scattered and unfocused, resulting in less severe ground displacement, tsunamis, and seismic and volcanic activity than previously theorized.

The Princeton simulations also could help researchers gain insight into the unseen surface and interior details of other planets and moons, the authors reported. The simulations can pinpoint the strength of the meteorite's antipodal focus -- the area of the globe opposite of the crater where the energy from the initial collision comes together like a second, smaller impact. The researchers found this point is determined by how the features and composition of the smitten orb direct and absorb the seismic waves. Scientists could identify the planet or moon's characteristics by comparing a crater to the remnants of the antipodal point and calculating how the impact waves spread.

Lead author Matthias Meschede of the University of Munich developed the model at Princeton through the University's Visiting Student Research Collaborators program with co-authors Conor Myhrvold, who earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton in 2011, and Tromp, who also is director of Princeton's Institute for Computational Science and Engineering and a professor of applied and computational mathematics. Meschede describes the findings as follows:

"We have developed the first model to account for how Earth's surface features and shape would influence the spread of seismic activity following a meteorite impact. For the Earth, these calculations are usually made using a smooth, perfect sphere model, but we found that the surface features of a planet or a moon have a huge effect on the aftershock a large meteorite will have, so it's extremely important to take those into account.

"After a meteorite impact, seismic waves travel outward across the Earth's surface like after a stone is thrown in water. These waves travel all the way around the globe and meet in a single point on the opposite side from the impact known as the antipode. Our model shows that because the Earth is elliptical and its surface is heterogeneous those waves travel with different speeds in different areas, changing where the waves end up on the other side of the world and the waves' amplitude when they get there. These waves also are influenced by the interior. The effect on the opposite side is a result of the complete structure.

"We began by asking whether the meteorite that hit the Earth near Chicxulub could be connected to other late-Cretaceous mass-extinction theories. For example, there's a prominent theory that the meteorite triggered huge volcanic eruptions that changed the climate. These eruptions are thought to have originated in the Deccan Traps in India, approximately on the opposite side of the Earth from the Chicxulub crater at the time. Because North America was closer to Europe and India was closer to Madagascar during the Cretaceous period, however, it seemed questionable that the Deccan Traps were at the Chicxulub impact's antipode.

"Regarding the mass extinction, we saw from our measurements that a Chicxulub-sized impact alone would be too small to cause such a large volcanic eruption as what occurred at the Deccan Traps. Our model shows that the antipodal focusing of the seismic wave from such an impact was hugely overestimated in previous calculations, which used a spherical-Earth model.

"The Earth's maximum ground displacement at this point has been calculated to be 15 meters, which is extreme. The first outcome of our model was that this is reduced by a large amount to about three to five meters. On the spherical model, all the waves come together at exactly one point and, as a result, have a huge amplitude. We found the waves are disturbed by surface features and take on a more ragged structure, meaning less energy is concentrated at the antipode.

"But our results go beyond Chicxulub. We can, in principle, now estimate how large a meteorite would have to have been to cause catastrophic events. For instance, we found that if you increase the radius of the Chicxulub meteorite by a factor of five while leaving its velocity and density the same, it would have been large enough to at least fracture rocks on the opposite side of the planet. Our model can be used to estimate the magnitude and effect of other major impacts in Earth's past. A similar model could be used to study other examples of antipodal structures in the solar system, such as the strange region opposite the gigantic Caloris Basin crater on Mercury.

"Also, such a model can help examine the interior of a moon or planet by comparing the size of the crater to the amount of antipodal disruption -- you only need two pictures, basically. One could correlate a certain impact magnitude with the observed antipodal effect -- which is dependent on the object's surface features -- and better understand the heterogeneity of the surface by how the energy was distributed between those two points. That can reveal information about not only the surface structure of the body at the time of the impact, but also the interior, such as if the planet has a hard core."

This research was supported by the National Science Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service.

Putin praises himself as 'most hardworking' leader (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has praised himself as Russia's "most hardworking" leader since World War II.

In his first lengthy interview since last month's announcement that he will seek a third presidential term, the 59-year-old prime minister said that Communist-era leaders were not physically capable and did not have "the will" to run the country the way he did.

After serving two presidential terms, Putin anointed a successor, Dmitry Medvedev, who appointed him prime minister and was widely seen as a No. 2 leader. Putin can run for two more consecutive terms and could stay in power until 2024.

He said that his decision still leaves average Russians an opportunity to "make their choice" in the upcoming elections in March.

UnitedHealth shares slide after CEO talks 2012 (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Shares of UnitedHealth Group Inc. tumbled Tuesday as the health insurer's CEO gave a cautious preview of 2012 after his company delivered a better-than-expected earnings performance for the third quarter and raised its 2011 forecast.

CEO Stephen J. Hemsley told analysts he expects earnings to grow next year, but high unemployment rates, growing care use and the health care overhaul will pressure the Minnetonka, Minn., insurer's performance. He didn't offer a specific forecast for next year. The company is saving that for its Nov. 29 investor conference.

The CEO offered "a laundry list of negatives" regarding its 2012 outlook without an equal list of positives, other than noting the company's record of execution and innovation, said CRT Capital Group analyst Sheryl Skolnick

"They really want to make sure that people understand the challenges that the company faces with the thought that performance will drive upside if it happens, and that's an appropriate way of looking at the universe," she said. "Unfortunately it results in the stock being down on earnings day."

Company shares fell $2.10, or 4.5 percent, to $44.50 in afternoon trading, while broader trading indexes rose slightly. Even though the insurer's stock dropped, it was still up more than 20 percent for 2011.

UnitedHealth and other insurers have strung together several quarters of strong performances, helped in part by enrollment growth and health care use that use has grown at a slower rate than they expected when they set premiums.

Shares of UnitedHealth's competitors also sank Tuesday after UnitedHealth became the first managed care company to report third-quarter numbers and talk about expectations for the new year.

Both Skolnick and BMO Capital analyst Dave Shove expect a rebound.

Shove noted that investors have no context when UnitedHealth announces earnings. Other insurers also may say they expect challenges next year when they report earnings over the next several days, but Shove thinks the sector's stocks will recover as more companies report strong third quarters and increase their 2011 forecasts.

If UnitedHealth releases a 2012 forecast next month that's higher than analyst expectation, the company's stock could climb higher than it was before Tuesday's earnings report, Shove said.

Analysts currently expect, on average, earnings of $4.78 per share for 2012, according to FactSet.

UnitedHealth, the largest U.S. health insurer based on revenue, reported net income of $1.27 billion, or $1.17 per share, in the three months that ended Sept. 30. That compares with $1.28 billion, or $1.14 per share, in the same quarter last year, when the company had more shares outstanding. Revenue rose 7 percent to $25.28 billion.

Analysts forecast earnings of $1.12 per share on $25.41 billion in revenue.

The insurer also said it now expects 2011 earnings to range between $4.40 and $4.45 per share on more than $101 billion in revenue. That's up from its previous forecast for earnings of $4.15 to $4.25 per share on $101 billion in revenue.

Analysts expect 2011 earnings of $4.39 per share on $101.5 billion in revenue.

Revenue from UnitedHealth's largest segment, UnitedHealthcare, grew 6 percent to $23.64 billion, as the company's medical enrollment rose 5 percent to 34.4 million people compared to last year's quarter. UnitedHealthcare includes commercial coverage like employer-sponsored group insurance and government-funded Medicare and Medicaid business.

The company's medical costs also rose 7 percent to $18.41 billion compared to last year's quarter, mainly due to price increases. UnitedHealth also said it saw a "modest increase" in utilization trends for doctor's offices and outpatient care.

UnitedHealth is seen as a bellwether for managed care companies. WellPoint Inc. will follow with its third-quarter results on Oct. 26, and Aetna Inc. reports the next day. Humana Inc. reports its earnings Oct. 31, and Cigna Corp. announces results Nov. 3.

Boneheaded Economics (The Weekly Standard)

Washington (The Weekly Standard) Vol. 017, Issue 06 - 10/24/2011 ? It?s not just the Occupy Wall Street rabble who are promoting unorthodox ideas (to put it kindly) about our economic plight and how to create jobs. They have friends in Washington. A few examples:

Barbara Lee, a House member from California, is upset about computerized checkout lines at grocery stores. She avoids lines with no flesh-and-blood checker. ?I refuse to do that,? Lee said at a House Appropriations Committee hearing, ?I know that?s a job or two or three that?s gone.?

Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois is up in arms about the iPad, which he declared on the House floor recently is ?now probably responsible for eliminating thousands of jobs.? Alas, ?what becomes of bookstores and librarians and all the jobs associated with paper?? Quite soon, he said, ?such jobs will simply not exist.?

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi has her own remedy for the jobs dearth: Extend unemployment benefits. ?It injects demand into the economy,? she insists. ?It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name.? It has the ?double benefit? of putting money in the pockets of the jobless and acting as a ?job creator.?

Representative Keith Ellison of Minnesota is the champion of job creation by adding to the regulatory burden of businesses. Sounds counter-productive, right? Not so, Ellison told MSNBC. Companies will have to hire more people to comply with new regs. ?If the government says, look, we have got to reduce our carbon footprint, you will kick into gear a whole number of people that know how to do that or have ideas about that, and that will be a job engine,? Ellison said.

It shouldn?t surprise anyone that this type of talk comes from liberal Democrats. They?ve attached the jobs issue to the policies they?ve long supported. From all appearances, however, they genuinely believe these policies will accelerate growth in jobs. They?re oblivious to evidence to the contrary.

Democratic senator Barbara Boxer of California issued a report recently to the effect that rules promulgated by the Environmental Protection Agency generate jobs. ?Industries that provide environmental protection? have begot more than one million jobs, the report said. What about industries that lost jobs because of EPA regulations? Forget it.

A skeptic might see this as a bit too convenient to be credible. The more regulations coming out of EPA, the more liberal Democrats swoon with delight. Republicans regard them as ?job killers.?

And when a regulation is withdrawn or postponed, as was the case with the one limiting ozone emissions, the Boxer brigade protests. Paul Krugman, the New York Times columnist, echoed Ellison, claiming the ozone regulation would have boosted demand and created jobs.

But if regulations lead to greater employment, ?the economy should be in danger of overheating right about now,? Investor?s Business Daily noted. The Obama administration has set a record for issuing the most regulations in the shortest period of time, yet unemployment is stuck at 9.1?percent and the economy flirts with dipping back into recession.

President Obama and Treasury secretary Tim Geithner have voiced sympathy with the Occupy Wall Street crowd, which is understandable from the political standpoint of a president seeking reelection. A distraction from his dismal record in Washington is a godsend for Obama. If Wall Street is chiefly to blame for the nation?s economic mess, he is off the hook.

Like the protesters, Obama has bizarre ideas about jobs. As best I can tell, he believes government-created jobs will lead to stronger economic growth. Thus the so-called ?jobs bill? he?s currently touting.?

The president has his economics upside down. In real life, the only reliable way to produce permanent jobs is through private investment that increases economic growth. The point here, which has eluded Obama, is that growth comes first and jobs follow.

Obama?s scheme for making green energy competitive is also backwards. His cap and trade plan was designed to make conventional sources of energy?coal, oil, natural gas?more expensive and give nonfossil energy an advantage in the marketplace. Why wait for the green stuff to become competitive on its own and produce those five million green jobs the president has promised? That would take decades.

?Our economy needs a jolt,? Obama said in Pittsburgh last week. He isn?t keen on learning from experience. Every measure in his bill has been tried at least once, at his insistence, and failed to bring about a jobs-rich recovery.

How does he explain this? He doesn?t. Rather, he points to unnamed ?independent economists? who?ve concluded his bill ?would grow this economy and put people back to work. .??.??. And no other jobs plan,? he says, ?has that kind of support from economists, no plan from Congress, no plan from anybody.?

If this were true, the White House would have trotted out a platoon of economists to endorse his bill publicly. But it?s not true. Except for Keynesian diehards like Krugman, the bill has received minimal backing from economists.

Nor are the Occupy Wall Street folks demanding passage of the bill. But there?s one part of the Obama message that?s on their radar. It?s the hostility to rich people, the 1 percent who are supposedly making out like bandits at the expense of the rest of us, the 99 percent.

Obama wants to end tax breaks and increase tax rates for the
1 percent, the plutocrats. ?Would we rather maintain these tax breaks for the wealthiest few, or should we give tax cuts to the entrepreneurs who might need it to start that business [or] launch that new idea they?ve got?? he asked in Pittsburgh.

Lost on Obama?and no doubt on the Occupy Wall Street movement?is a simple economic truth. It?s mostly the 1 percent who bankroll the entrepreneurs or are the entrepreneurs themselves. Tax them more and you?re likely to get fewer jobs. But you?ll still have a villain to whip.

Occupy Wall Street Hackathons Want to Build a Better Protest (Mashable)

Occupy Wall Street has an IT department. The movement's technologists, like their park-squatting counterparts, are a decentralized group. But they've independently started hackathons this weekend in New York City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Even before the first protester showed up at Wall Street on Sept. 17, a group of people had started working on the movement's technology components . The so-called Internet working group has held meetings that covered how to edit the site openly, how to run the Twitter account and what server space to use. It's not necessarily the most organized operation, but it's becoming more so.

[More from Mashable: #OccupyWallStreet Protests Grow]

"I think we're going to see a few people leading the helm really soon and saying this is what we need, this is what we're working on right now," says Occupy Together NYC Hackathon creator Andrew Gwozdziewycz, who is a casual member of several listervs that discuss the movement's technology needs. "So far that doesn't seem to be happening yet. ... They are taking over the main website and centralizing control of it."

Meanwhile, hackathoners like Gwozdziewycz are hoping to build better technologies that aid the movement and its on-the-ground protesters. He, for instance, plans to build a group messaging app that sends text messages to groups members that are in a similar location.

[More from Mashable: Occupy Wall Street Protests Sprout 928 Offshoots On Meetup.com Overnight]

?Right now they?re using the people?s microphone to broadcast the fact that there?s a working group meeting at the library," Gwozdziewycz says. "And that?s a lot of noise for no reason when people could be coordinating on their phone.?

A hackathon at Meetup headquarters on Friday aims to build programs that aid the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Gwozdziewycz is a Meetup employee and is hosting the hackathon at the group meeting platform's Broadway-Avenue office on Friday. About a dozen hackathon participants are there working on communication platforms, media aggregation tools or even, in one case, a "distributed decision making platform." Aaron Williamson is working on an ongoing project that aims to preserve privacy online. He, like most of the people who are running and participating in the Occupy Wall Street hackathons, has not been very involved in the Occupy Wall Street protests.

"Honestly I haven't even gotten down to the movement," he says, "mostly because I have a full-time job."

?I don?t really know a whole lot about what is going on down there," says Cameron Cundiff, who was thinking about building a tool that could sort which Tweets are most relevant to protest activities. "I?ve only seen what I?ve been able to gleen in popular forms, but I wanted to learn more and I also think it?s an interesting design challenge because you don?t want to screw that up, helping someone who is under pressure and the risk of being arrested. It gives you constraints that are pretty hard.?

Hackathons in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., that will start on Saturday morning and Friday evening respectively are also anticipating good turnouts. Matt Ewing, a clean energy startup co-founder, started inviting people to the San Francisco hackathon on Tuesday evening and says that about 50 people have signed up. Stefan Fox, a developer for the New Organizing Institute who started the D.C. hackathon, says his RSVP list looks similarly promising. Although neither of them was aware of the other's event when they started planning their respective hackathons, they've since decided to run a common chatroom for participants.

"If you think that software and the web are powerful tools, then hackathons like this are a good way to add some value," Ewing says. "It???s a 21st century movement. People are going to be taking it and tweaking it and forking it in all different directions based on what they???re interested in."

Gameloft to make Xperia Play-optimised titles available on the Android Market

Gameloft will be adding its Xperia Play-optimised titles to the Android Market from now on, having previously restricted them to its own store.

The company originally revealed the move on Twitter, in response to a question from @XperiaGamer.

?This is in reference to future Android HD titles,? Gameloft told Pocket Gamer. ?If the Xperia Play is supported for them then they'll be available through the Android Market as well as our store.

?Xperia Play versions of our back catalogue of games already on the Android Market will be added on a case-by-case basis, providing the game is available for the device.?

Effectively, this means that customers will have the choice to register with just one supplier - the Android Market. This will be a relief for anyone who doesn?t buy Gameloft games very often or doesn?t want to split their credit card details between multiple companies.

"Fight Back" phone app to protect women in India (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Women in New Delhi will soon be able to fight off potential attackers with a push of a phone button that will alert not only friends, family and police but also sound an alarm on their social networking websites.

One in every four rapes in India occurs in New Delhi, police say, with reports of women being bundled into moving cars and gang-raped before being dumped on roadsides, giving the city an unsavoury reputation as the "rape capital" of the nation. There is one rape every 18 hours, according to police.

The phone app "Fight Back" will be launched in November by a local charity and will function as an SOS alert device -- sending out a text message with a GPS location to up to five people, including police, and as a post on Facebook and Twitter.

"Safety for women has become such a huge issue here and we felt that citizens of Delhi, where possibly the problem exists the most, could use this type of technological intervention," said Hindol Sengupta, co-founder of Whypoll, which created the application.

"Women are harassed and molested everywhere on buses, at metro stations, in markets ... we believe this is Asia's first phone application aimed at making women safer."

In conservative and largely patriarchal India, women face a barrage of threats ranging from forced marriage and dowry murders to human trafficking, domestic violence, "honour killings" and abduction as well as sexual harassment and rape.

Rape cases in India increased by 760.4 percent to 21,397 cases in 2009 from 2,487 in 1971, according to latest figures from the National Crime Records Bureau.

But activists say this is a gross underestimation of the actual number of crimes, with most women afraid to go to police, fearing stigma and family dishonour.

While male attitudes towards women have improved over the last two decades due to greater awareness, the dangers to women remain starkly evident -- particularly in New Delhi.

The "Fight Back" app will initially be available to download from the Whypoll website (www.whypoll.org) for a nominal fee and will be supported by a range of mobile devices such as Nokia and BlackBerry. SOS alerts will cost the same as an SMS.

Sengupta said the app, which is part of the Whypoll's "Safe in the City" campaign, will also map the SOS alerts to build an accurate database of where and what gender-related crimes occur.

"We have created a platform where women can remain anonymous yet the incident will still be recorded and reflected on a map on our website -- which will help us push for action in places where there appears to be increased risks to women," he said.

Smoking Is a Drag at the Box Office

News | Health

An analysis of top-grossing movies from the last decade shows that films with smoking make less money

smoking in movieBurning money?: Movie-makers are burning potential earnings when they have onscreen characters light up, new research suggests. Image: iStockphoto/THEPALMER

It could almost be enough to make Cruella de Vil consider a nicotine patch: a new analysis has found that films with scenes that show smoking reliably make less money at the box office than their cigarette-free counterparts. The finding, says Stanton Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, adds to the case for giving any movie that depicts smoking to an automatic 'R' rating.

Together with Jonathan Polansky, who helped craft anti-smoking messaging? in the past and now heads the California-based media campaign company Onbeyond, Glantz reviewed information on 1,232 movies released in the U.S. that were among the top 10 grossing films for at least one week between 2002 and 2010.

Movies with bigger budgets tended to earn more at the box-office, as they were more likely to feature big stars and massive promotional marketing. Moreover, PG-13 films had a better chance of making more money than R rated films?in part because the former are accessible to a wider age-range of moviegoers. But even after controlling for factors such as total budget and film rating, the researchers found that smoking was associated with 13 percent less money made in ticket sales.

Thirteen percent might not sound like a big difference, but it can translate in to many millions of dollars given the huge profits of blockbusters. Last year, for example, Inception and Iron Man 2 each made around $300 million in U.S. theaters alone.

"Putting smoking in the film isn't leading to more popular films that make more money," Glantz says. It's leading to less popular films that make less money." As to why films with smoking make fewer dollars, Glantz says he is uncertain, but he adds it might be part of a collection of edgy behaviors in a film that don?t appeal to audiences as much as movie studios expect.

The research, which was funded by the Legacy Foundation, a Washington, DC-based tobacco prevention nonprofit, was published online September 26in Tobacco Control.

Smoke screen

The controversy over cigarettes in films has raged for decades. It was not so long ago that tobacco companies paid directors to include scenes with smoking. For example, the company American Tobacco, which is now part of British American Tobacco, maker of brands such as Lucky Strike, gave a product placement firm at least $675,000 between 1984 and 1994 to get its products featured in films.

Perhaps best known for documenting that big tobacco knew for decades that nicotine was addictive and that smoking caused cancer, Glantz leads the Smoke Free Movies project, which aims advocates for the automatic 'R' rating for any film that shows characters puffing away on screen, to prevent ''anyone under the age of 17 from seeing the film in the theater without the accompaniment of a parent or adult guardian.

In September, the World Health Organization echoed the call for worldwide adult ratings for films depicting tobacco use. And other researchers have called for similar age restrictions, including Andrea Waylen of the University of Bristol in the UK. A study published by Waylen and her colleagues in the journal Thorax, released last month, crunched survey data from more than 5,000 adolescents and found that those 15-year-olds who had watched the most films featuring smoking were 73 percent more likely to have tried a drag than their counterparts who had seen the fewest such films. "The results of our study indicate that it's very important that children are protected from smoking in films," she says. Waylen adds that the findings from Glantz's study strengthen the case for adult ratings: "If there is no associated increase in [movie] income what possible excuse is there for smoking to be included?"

The rating of a film, which is ultimately set in the U.S. by the Motion Picture Association of America, is usually in mind before the first frame is shot, and written by studios into the contract of many movie directors, according to Glantz. So he hopes the new findings will convince studios to keep cigarettes out of the frame: "Hollywood is all about money. They talk about art, but it's all about money."

But not everyone is convinced that automatic 'R' ratings for smoking provide the answer. Simon Chapman of the University of Sydney, who describes himself as "'enemy number one' of the tobacco industry here in Australia", says that using this type of adult classification is an inefficient way of keeping youngsters from trying cigarettes. "I think that it's a very minor thing," he says of movie ratings. He adds that making more films R-rated would unfairly put the onus on parents to sort through which films show violence and sex, and which ones show smoking.

Chapman also points out that the new report from Glantz and Polansky does not take sales of DVDs and downloads into account?and many teens are able to view R-rated films this way. He adds, "the fact is that kids are already seeing R-rated films with great ease. Even the ones whose parents don't allow them to do that find a way."

The Motion Picture Association of America says it takes a highly contextual approach to determining film ratings, rather than an 'automatic' approach based on a checklist.? "We believe that we should treat smoking as we treat all other rating elements," says Howard Gantman, a spokesperson for the association.

However the campaign for automatic R-ratings for smoking turns out for future films, smoky classics such as Disney's 1961 cartoon 101 Dalmatians?featuring Cruella De Vil puffing away at her cigarette holder?will likely remain a popular children's movie for years to come. "In fact," Glantz notes, "101 Dalmatians was one of the smokiest films made."

A Business Plan for the Heart | Fitness Realized

A Business Plan for the Heart
Stephen A. Black. M.Ed., P.T., A.T.C./L., N.S.C.A.-C.P.T.

Just as a business plans for its future health, so too must individuals. Help your employees and clients with realistic investment goals and the means to track their successes and failures.

If you don?t know where you are going, you will never get there. This is true in all aspects of life, but no truer than with cardiovascular training. If clients are overweight, out of shape and have preventable disease, they probably lack a plan and the appropriate incentives to achieve success?which, in this case, is optimal health. Genetics do play a role, but prudent investment in exercise and a diversified lifestyle program will yield the desired net gain.
The words above are usually reserved for the business world, and are common language for MBAs, accountants, and CEOs, but this article will explore a new paradigm for the healthcare industry. It will take a pragmatic approach to the development of a business plan for the heart. Traditional concepts used in business plans will be used to develop a strategic plan for cardiovascular training.

Just the Facts
Heart disease, stroke and atherosclerosis are the leading causes of death in men and women in the United States. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the developed world, accounting for approximately one quarter of deaths. Most deaths occur within the first two days after a heart episode, while those who survive this period progress well, if they have not developed heart failure or serious arrhythmias. Participation in a cardiac rehabilitation program can promote recovery, enable patients to achieve and maintain better health, and reduce the risk of death in people who have heart disease. It has been shown that exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation can reduce fatal events by 25 percent in the first year of recovery, and significantly reduce overall mortality from cardiac illness. Recent studies of psychosocial and education-based cardiac rehabilitation have shown even more impressive benefits in terms of mortality, morbidity and quality of life.

Cardiovascular Disease

57 million Americans have cardiac disease.
It?s the leading cause of death in American women.
It accounts for 945,000 deaths each year-more than all cancers combined.
Six million hospital admissions have been attributed to cardiac disease.
It causes 37.7 million lipid abnormalities a year.
It?s a major health issue for children ages 12 to 15.

Hypertension

Hypertension causes the death of 50 million Americans a year.
The American Heart Association states that people who are inactive and out of shape face a 30 to 50 percent greater risk of developing high blood pressure (greater than 140/90).

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), many Americans may be surprised at the extent and strength of the evidence linking physical activity to numerous health improvements. Most significantly, regular physical activity reduces the risk of developing diabetes, hypertension and colon cancer, it enhances mental health, it fosters healthy muscles, bones and joints; and it helps maintain function and preserve independence in older adults.
Mission Statement
?Even if you are on the right track, you?ll get run over if you just sit there,? said Will Rogers.
A mission statement is a sentence, phrase or paragraph that describes the goal of an existing or new business, and typically begins a business plan. Modify this concept to meet client needs and expectations: What are your clients? ultimate cardiovascular goals?
Goals must be realistic and attainable, and your job is to make the statement realistic in scope and magnitude. A mission statement might be, ?I am in the business of cardiovascular conditioning and fat loss. I will decrease my walking pulse by five beats per minute, and decrease my body fat by 5 percent.? The mission statement must be written down, put in plain sire, and reviewed and /or revised frequently.

Competitive Analysis
Any astute businessperson approaching a new business venture will research the competition. Commonly, this process uses an analysis called SWOT (strengths, weakness, obstacles and treats). So, who is the competition and how are they doing?

The three greatest competitors are inactivity, lack of information and poor direction and instruction. In activity can mushroom among a population when there is lack of information about how to combat the risks associated with it. It can become even further exacerbated by facilities that fail to provide adequate services and advice to achieve exercise success. However, the advantages of fitness are now being actively promoted by the medical industry, insurance industry, HMOs. Individual companies and the government, resulting in a significant increase in awareness and focus on the benefits of exercise. The influence of the medical field will drive future additional health club demand. Since the 1996 publication of the first report of the Surgeon General on the Physical Activity and Health, the medical community has increased its emphasis on the benefits of exercise. The repot proved what everyone knew for years: physical activity is directly related to preventing disease and extending longevity.

In the past, the government?s influence has been increasing awareness of important public health issues, including the adverse health consequences of smoking, as well as reports on HIV/AIDS, both spawning major public health initiatives. Now the government is on the fitness bandwagon. As a result the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, National Arthritis Foundation, CDC, National Institute on Health, IHRSA an others founded the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity to address the major health and financial consequences of physical inactivity in America, Additionally, since 1996, many research reports on exercise have been published in major medical journals, representing that exercise reduces the risk of many diseases. These same journals also published on the dangers of smoking.

Going Public
Often, a business that has a proven track record of revenue growth, earnings and market share will raise capital so it can grow. One way to raise capital is to offer shares in the business, called an IPO (initial public offering). With cardiovascular training, the process is the same. The plan is filed with the coach and includes the financials, the management team and the competition.

One of the critical components of this disclosure is future earnings estimate. Disclosing this information to others will put pressure on the client to achieve the stated goals. This disclosure of intent will inform and educate those individuals who have direct and frequent contract with the client of the business plan. They will therefore, become the ?management team.? Starting with those closest to the client is best. Immediate family and friends are the best management team, as are co-workers and business associates. Going public with a cardiovascular business plan will let the management team and others know of their commitment to become healthy.

The Management Team
In the words of Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald?s, ?You?re only as good as the people you hire.? A client entering into the heart rate business has researched the competition and ascertained who is doing it right and who is doing it wrong. They went public. Now is the time to assemble the management team. This team is critical to the success of the program and business plan. Well ?run companies have a select few who make up senior management. These individuals create and steer the course of the business. The team includes those closest to the client, including the coach. Potential members are everyone who has a vested interest in these individuals and their success, such as a spouse (significant other), co-worker, and exercise physiologist or workout partner.

A Business Plan
Schedule a meeting with the management team and develop and agenda to articulate the business plan. Tell clients to be specific about what brought them to this decision. Summarize the business plan philosophy and outline how this will help achieve their goals. Such goals could be to increase exercise tolerance; gain the ability to walk 3 miles at 55 to 65 percent max heart rate; follow an exercise prescription prior to the onset of disease; decrease total cholesterol below 150; maintain appropriate exercise and diet for the prevention of disease and co-morbidities; drop blood pressure to 120/80; improve circulation to prevent peripheral arterial disease; enhance lifestyle; play catch with the children on week ends; or to walk the entire day at Disney World during vacation.

Be clear to your clients that they will need help: Everyone needs help to achieve the goals of a business plan. Be clear about helpers? roles, whether it?s assisting with testing to determine appropriate heart rate levels for exercise or as an exercise partner. Explain the business plan theory and why it can work.

The Financials
Beginning exercisers, those increasing the intensity of their programs or those with exercise risk factors should have a graded exercise test (GXT), The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that men over age 45 and women over age 55 have a GXT prior to initiating an exercise routine. This test is usually given under the supervision of a cardiologist. It determines appropriate maximal heart rate and gives valuable information regarding cardiovascular response to increased workload. The test also determines the electrical response of the heart under stress, and blood pressure and heart rate response to increased demand. These factors are critical for determining the appropriateness of exercise and exercise intensities. This test should not be confused with certain commercial tests now available.

The test is conducted by having the client breathe through a mouthpiece during rest or exercise. The volume of air moving in and out of the lungs, oxygen consumed, carbon dioxide produced and heart rate recorded for every breath. During the early stages of the test, the body responds efficiently, using fats and carbohydrates as a fuel source. As the workload increases, the energy demands eventually exceed the body?s ability to use oxygen and burn fat as a fuel source. At this point, lactic acid begins to accumulate in the blood. This is known as the anaerobic threshold, and usually occurs 45 and 90 percent of maximum heart rate. Knowing this ?financial? information will assist in developing a plan for ? financial? success, as seen in improved cardiovascular condition, weight loss or maintenance.

Due to technological advances, this valuable testing procedure is now available commercially, and is found in progressive healthcare facilities. The variability ranges from resting metabolic rate (RMR) to sub-maximal VO2, and if conditions permit, to max or peak VO2 max assessment, allowing the clinician to glean significant insight into their clients? physiological level of function. Armed with these vital statistics, valuable projections can be made and revenue (improved fitness) increased.
It?s important to remember that other variables may impact clients? ability to achieve financial success, such as level of daily stress, nutritional habits, sleep, climate and overtraining.

Revenue Allocation
Once the financials are tabulated, various intensity levels can be formulated and matched to the corresponding exercise heart rates. These heart rate intensity levels (ILs) are unique to each individual?s metabolic (financial) profile.

IL No. 1: 55 to 65 percent max heart rate, which is the perfect level to burn fat as the primary energy source, and the level for beginners. It should be maintained for 15 to 40 minutes, three to four times a week. This may also be used as a recovery level for well-trained athletes.

IL No. 2: 65 to 75 percent max heart rate, which is the perfect level to improve overall cardiovascular endurance and reduce weight. It promotes glucose sparing and primarily uses fat as an energy source. This is referred to as the cardiovascular base level. A sustained effort at this level for 30 to 60 minutes, three to four times per week, will yield the desired results.

IL No. 3: 75 to 85 percent max heart rate will improve lactate tolerance, break through workout plateaus and improve mental toughness. This intensity level should be performed one to two times per week, preceded by a good warm-up and followed by 10 to 20 minutes sustained at this heart rate. An adequate cool-down and flexibility work will prevent staleness and muscle soreness.

IL No. 4: 88 to 90 percent plus max heart rate, used by elite or recreational athletes to improve anaerobic conditioning and increase speed. Performed in short intervals, the key is the recovery following each interval. Recovery should be to IL No.1 before initiating the next interval. This is a performance-enhancement level. Typically, this workout is preceded by a warm-up, gradually increasing the heart rate, and then progressing into four to 10 intervals of various length (100, 200, 300 and 400 meters, for example), interrupted with recovery down to IL No. 1 prior to initiating the next interval. Appropriate cool-down is also recommended. IL No. 4 should not be undertaken more than once a week.

Preservation of Capital
For investments, whether in stocks, bonds or real estate, preservation of capital is critical (i.e., keep the capital, don?t lose money and make a profit). The same approach is applied to the heart rate exercise plan. Train your clients for maximum gains (profits). Using the financial Performa provided, clients can see immediate and long-term gains.

Track the results by setting up a spreadsheet that clients can fill-in and relate to. To initiate this process, have them write down three for four favorite activities (similar to favorite stocks, bonds, etc.). Next, develop a success scale. Track progress by having them answer these questions each week:

?Are you doing your favorite activities??
?What was your resting heart rate, taken at the same waking time each week?? They should wear their heart rate monitor for this process, as manual readings are inaccurate.
?Rate how you feel on a 10-point scale, with 1 being the ?worst I?ve ever felt,? and 10 being ?the best I?ve ever felt.??

Also track clients? daily activities as related to frequency, duration (time, distance, etc.), intensity (heart rate), and additional revenue enhancements, such as increased caloric expenditure; increased strength; decreased incidence and severity of injury; joint stability; core stability and improved flexibility; improved bone mineral density; decreased total cholesterol (below 150); increased HDL cholesterol (above 45; decreased LDL cholesterol (below 100); improved glucose metabolism, which diminished risk of type II diabetes; reduced risk of colon cancer by increasing transit time; reduced blood pressure; improved posture; increased energy; decreased risk of falls in the elderly; and improved mood and decreased incidence of depression.

These and others are realistic investment goals for the business plan for the heart.

Heart Rate Monitors
Clients? financial success is dependent on one specific tool: the heart rate monitor. Just as the CFO (Chief financial officer) used a calculator, the business plan for the heart uses a heart rate monitor. There are many to choose from, and the ?buyer beware? concept applies.

The most accurate heart rate monitors commercially available come in two parts: transmitter and receiver, the transmitter is worn around the chest and is made of conductive rubber electrodes that provide continuous contact with the skin. The rubber electrodes are flexible, allowing the transmitter to move freely and comfortable during exercise. The transmitter counts the number of heartbeats and transfers the information directly to the receiver. This is different from the contact heart rate, which is not as accurate as continuous heart rate, and may distract clients, causing inaccuracy in actual heart rate, or injury due to the change in concentration. However, this may be the only option in the existence of obesity, heavy scarring on the chest (thoracic surgery) or arrhythmia.

The receiver may be in the form of headphones, or a functional and fashionable watch. They range from simple to complex ? displaying heart rate only, to features including a stopwatch, alarms and various heart rate monitoring features (time in target zone, total exercise time, caloric expenditure and recovery). Additional features include altitude and bicycle interface for power (Watts), distance and cadence.

The receiver acts as your personal digital assistant. Information can be preset, recorded, replayed and downloaded for statistical analysis, financial report generation and projections. In additions, this information can be used in conjunction with Palm Pilate/PC-compatible programs for diet and exercise planning and tracking, and adherence. Personal digital coaches can guide clients through an exercise session, and help them to maintain proper exercise levels. Much as financial decisions are made based on the Performa and projections, exercise programs can be based on an objective assessment of the body?s metabolic and fitness profiles.

It?s All in the Plan
Comparable to the principles learned in business and financial institutions, the business plan for the heart rate is based on proven scientific principles, and evidenced-based randomized clinical trials in the realm of exercise physiology. This personal exercise program uses and objective assessment of metabolism and fitness level to provide exercise professionals with the tools to develop and individualized exercise business plan. Whatever the weight or fitness goals, the business plan for the heart can help individuals live a more fit, productive and enjoyable life. All it takes is a plan! HRC
